How The Phd gps started

The PhD GPS initially started as "Lessons to Our Former Selves", but thanks to the generosity of othres and hundreds of contributions received, it has evolved to become this site. The idea started when Chris Winchester and Beth Campbell were onboarding three new PhD students at the University of Minnesota and were trying to compile a set of resources. Instead of trying to curate a repository of resources from scratch for just 3 PhD students, they opted to crowdsource this information to provide hundreds of PhD students with resources/advice, particularly those without access to great advising.

Goals

Our main goal is to provide as much advice and resources to all PhD students as possible, so that everyone (including those without access to world-class advising and resources) can benefit.

While this site caters to organizational behavior and human resources (OBHR) PhD students participating in traditional 5-year US R1 PhD programs, we hope the resources available are helpful to even more students. There is a lot of overlap between PhD programs within and beyond the field of management, within and beyond the United States, and within and beyond R1 universities. As such, there is a lot of use for PhD students beyond this site's primary target demographic.
